Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA)
South Korea has recently announced that Singaporean visitors will no longer require a Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) for short-term visits, beginning April 1st, 2023. Singnally yet another step in post-Covid travel. This new policy has been warmly welcomed by travellers from Singapore, who can now enjoy hassle-free entry into South Korea. Please see the press release here.
The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed the decision to lift the K-ETA requirement for Singaporean passport holders. This amendment applies to visits for 90 days or less, encompassing both tourism and business purposes. The move is intended to promote stronger diplomatic ties and tourism exchange between the two nations.
Before implementing the K-ETA in October 2021, Singaporeans enjoyed visa-free entry into South Korea. However, the K-ETA requirement was introduced for all visa-waiver countries due to security concerns and the pandemic. Since then, Singaporean travellers have had to apply for the K-ETA online and pay a fee of $10 per application.
With this new policy in place, Singaporeans will once again be able to visit South Korea without applying for a K-ETA. However, to facilitate a smooth travel experience, travellers should ensure their passports have a minimum validity of six months from entry into South Korea.
Airlines Response
In response to this development, airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, and Asiana Airlines have already begun promoting flights between the two countries, with a surge in bookings expected.
South Korea’s decision to waive the K-ETA requirement for Singaporeans comes when both countries have made significant progress in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. This policy change is expected to boost tourism and strengthen economic relations between Singapore and South Korea.
Travellers should still be mindful of the ongoing pandemic and comply with any health and safety measures enforced by the respective countries. For the latest travel advisories and requirements, checking with the relevant authorities before embarking on a trip is advisable.
